This is a culture that has death everywhere; through oppression like the Agha, through honor killing and through revenge killing, such as it being understandable to kill all of your enemy’s family, little kids included.
Every action feels larger than life, reaching for a new mythology to give meaning to the human struggle. This book merits all the praise that it has received. Kemal’s debut is a more of a page folktale than a novel and I think this is a good thing.
A man he encounters puts this vision in his mind: What goes on here is that there is already hatred in Memed’s heart for the Agha, and the Agha has a hatred for Memed as well. Amazon Second Chance Pass it on, trade it in, give it a second life.
Things come to a head when his love is to be married to the nephew of the landlord. Lnce Agha catches up with the young couple, but only manages to capture Hatche, while Memed is able to avoid his pursuers and runs into the mountains. Those repetitions were tiring to this reader, and I have the same be I already had this checked out from the library for my ongoing kemed of Turkish literature when I came across a mention of the author in The Great Railway Bazaar by Paul Theroux.
